Every year on 10 December, Ukrainian sociological community honours the memory of Nataliia Panina (1949–2006), an outstanding social scientist. The year 2022 did not become an exception either: thanks to the joint efforts by the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Sociological Association of Ukraine and N. Panina Sociological Centre, the 16th International Sociological Readings (titled “Ukrainian society in conditions of war”) were arranged. The event was also dedicated to the memory of Valerii Vorona (1940–2022), who was at the head of the Institute of Sociology for three decades. Representatives from all regional branches of the Sociological Assosiation of Ukraine, as well as researchers from Baltic International Academy (Riga), the University of California (Berkeley) and Columbia University in the City of New York were among those joining the Readings. Seven keynote presentations were delivered at the plenary session: “Pitirim Sorokin’s warnings to present-day society: A hundred years later” (Oleksandr Holikov); “Russia’s war against Ukraine: The dynamics of public opinion in the USA” (Svitlana Khutka); “War as a manifestation of social madness” (Stanislav Kataiev); “Commemorating those who lost their lives in the war: Changes in global practices and the Ukrainian experience” (Danylo Sudyn); “History and historical memory as objects of struggle between world views and ideologies” (Mykola Kozlovets); “Threats to the population’s social safety and security in the South of Ukraine: New challenges and ways to minimise them” (Liudmyla Kalashnikova); “Historical consciousness of the population of Ukraine’s Donbas and memory policies of the RF as an aggressor nation in the temporarily occupied territories of the region” (Vitalii Masnenko). A round-table discussion, which took place after the plenary, was focused on the following issues: structural, sociopolitical and sociocultural changes that have occurred in Ukrainian society during the large-scale war, psychological state of Ukraine’s population and distinguishing characteristics of social research conducted in wartime.
A more detailed report on the 16th International Sociological Readings will be published in the next issue of the “Sociology: Theory, Methods, Marketing” journal.
