The paper gives an overview of the 15th International Sociological Readings, which took place at the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on 10 December 2021. The aim of the conference was to honour the memory of Natalia Panina (1949–2006) and Valerii Khmelko (1939–2021), two outstanding Ukrainian scholars. The event consisted of two parts. The first one was arranged as a plenary session, during which four keynote presentations were delivered: “Valerii Khmelko and his underrated ideas” (V. Paniotto), “Utopian communism, reformed Marxism and anti-party revisionism as phases of V.Ye. Khmelko’s world view and scholarly path between the 1960s and the late 1980s: Reminiscences” (R. Lenchovskyi), “The global echo of a local crisis: A conflict of ideas at a US university” (P. Fedorchenko-Kutuev) and “Ukraine is still terra incognita in present-day social sciences” (T. Brik). The second part of the Readings focused on the results of the “2020–2021 Junior Sociologist of the Year”, an essay contest in which early and mid-career researchers, as well as young university lecturers, took part, competing for the Natalia Panina Prize. The contestants were invited to share the main points of their essays with the audience and to answer a few questions. Then followed a round-table discussion, and, finally, the contest winners and runners-up were announced. N. Otrishchenko (Lviv) won the top prize, whereas O. Deineko (Kharkiv) and M. Shpiker (Kyiv) came in second and third. Ye. Kovalska (Kyiv) was awarded the Iryna Popova Prize, and her essay was recognised as having social and practical significance. This special prize had been established in honour of a distinguished Ukrainian scholar, who is considered to be a founder of the Odesa School of Sociology.
Keywords: Natalia Panina, Valerii Khmelko, sociological studies, Ukrainian society, global and local crises, modern-day challenges, the “Junior Sociologist of the Year” contest.
