Ukrainian society nowadays: Challenges and threats

Pages: 179-194

Vitalii Chornyi - Doctor of Philosophy, Professor, National Defence University of Ukraine named after Ivan Chernyahovskiy, Kyiv

Abstract. The paper analyses internal and external threats and challenges facing Ukraine at present, as well as factors impeding the modernisation of Ukrainian society in general and reforms in the military sector in particular. On the basis of this analysis and also taking into account the experience of the newly independent states, the author has specified a number of concepts relating to the status of Ukrainian society and the war between Russia and Ukraine. What will be an effective stimulus to working out adequate responses to present-day challenges is an integral conception of modernisation encompassing all areas of Ukrainian society, and the military reform should be at the core of these policies — this is another important idea put forward in the paper. The reformed military sector will enable the revival of the nation’s powerful military-industrial complex, which, in turn, will significantly contribute to the industrialisation of our country. Other outcomes of the military reform should involve creating“a new model of the army” and formulating new approaches to the war between Russia and Ukraine, which is crucial for the maintenance of sovereignty and further building of Ukraine as an independent state.

Keywords: Ukrainian society, modernisation, military reform, challenge — stimulus — response, a newly independent state
